A former Labour leader of Inverclyde Council will no longer face trial after the case against him was today dropped by the Crown.
Stephen McCabe, a veteran of local politics in the Greenock area, stepped down from his role in charge of the local authority in November last year after his initial arrest.
The 60-year-old had pled not guilty after being charged with domestic assault and threatening or abusive behaviour.
McCabe was suspended by Labour following his arrest.
His case was listed today at Greenock Sheriff Court, but a spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said: “After careful consideration of all of the relevant facts and circumstances, the Procurator Fiscal decided that the case should not proceed at this time.
“The Crown reserves the right to proceed in the future.”
