AUSTIN, Texas — Norwegian battery firm Freyr has announced plans to relocate its global headquarters to Austin.
Freyr’s global headquarters will be located at 1211 E. Fourth St. in East Austin.
“Today marks another important step for Freyr as we execute our strategic plan to establish an integrated U.S. solar + battery storage manufacturing enterprise built on advanced technology,” said Daniel Barcelo, Freyr chairman of the board and chief executive officer. “Our global headquarters will be in Austin, Texas, which is a vibrant and fast-growing hub of renewable energy and advanced technology development, strategically located close to our operations.”
It comes after the company, a startup founded in 2018, ditched plans to build a $2.6 billion factory in Georgia as it pivots to becoming a U.S. solar company. Freyr had announced plans to build batteries for energy storage at the 368-acre site after the Biden administration passed the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022.
Freyr said it has now sold that site in the Atlanta area for $50 million.
The company also recently acquired Trina Solar’s 5-GW solar module factory in Wilmer, in Dallas County. That facility already employs 1,000 people in North Texas, the company said.
Barcelo said the company plans to bring more than 1,000 new jobs to the Texas economy.
“We look forward to building our teams in Austin and Wilmer, establishing a Texas job creation engine, and working with our partners across industry and government to invest in critical U.S. infrastructure,” he said.
