A contract as part of a new initiative for Renfrewshire residents living with a head injury could be rubber-stamped this week.
Elected members will be asked to approve awarding the three-year deal – worth a maximum of £300,000 excluding VAT – to Quarriers on Thursday.
If given the green light at the council’s finance, resources and customer services policy board, it will replace the previous service, also run by Quarriers, which closed last June.
A report, which will be considered by councillors, explained: “In June 2024, Renfrewshire Council committed £300,000 to commission a support service for people with a head injury and their families and carers for a three-year period.
“This new contract will support a wide spectrum of needs from non-medical rehabilitation support to ongoing day-to-day living and signpost those contacting or using the service under the contract to access an extensive range of wider support services that already exist across Renfrewshire, improving personal and family outcomes in the longer term.”
It is anticipated the new contract will begin on April 1 but the date will be confirmed in the council’s letter of acceptance.
Councillor Iain McMillan, Labour group leader and representative for Johnstone South and Elderslie, has regularly sought clarity around the shape of the new venture.
The politician welcomed the steps taken by the local authority but added he and his party colleagues continue to ask questions about the project.
Councillor McMillan said: “I suppose the devil is in the detail. I think we still need to know more about it because this is only a tender report. We have been asking questions about what this service actually involves and whether it will replicate the previous one.
“However, I’m delighted it’s happening and the council has stood up and allocated this money. They have our full support on that front.
“Some of the service users are saying, ‘Why did we go through all that and it’s just gone back to the same company?’
“These are some of the questions we are asking in the background. But I’m glad it’s moving along and that it’s happening now.”
