Sea moss, the latest health craze sweeping platforms like TikTok, has been put under the microscope by experts. They’ve weighed up the pros and cons to determine whether it’s a ‘superfood’ or just another ‘superfad’.

While they acknowledge that sea moss could offer various benefits, they caution that it might not be suitable for everyone.

Benefits of sea moss

The benefits of taking sea moss include thyroid support – the capsules are rich in iodine, crucial for healthy thyroid function, metabolism and hormone production. For those with low iodine levels, sea moss could be a natural way to maintain thyroid health, experts at Landys Chemist said.

It’s also nutrient-rich, packed with vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium, which are beneficial for bone health, muscle function, and immunity. The antioxidants in sea moss combat free radicals, helping to reduce inflammation and boost overall wellbeing.

Furthermore, sea moss promotes gut and skin health. It contains prebiotics that aid digestion by supporting gut bacteria, while its hydrating and collagen-boosting properties contribute to healthier skin.

However, there are drawbacks to taking sea moss. It’s not suitable for everyone – particularly those with thyroid disorders like hyperthyroidism, as an excess of iodine can disrupt hormone balance.
