(InvestigateTV) — Over 1,000 people in the United States are killed by extreme heat every year.

According to the Journal of American Medical Association, the number of heat-related deaths has more than doubled in the past quarter century.

Some groups, like the elderly, are at a greater risk. A new health initiative is providing alerts about weather conditions and resources.

Reporter Jaclyn Schultz shows us how it helped one senior citizen stay safe during record-breaking heat in Las Vegas.
