MILAM COUNTY, Texas — Texas Game Wardens and deputies got more than they bargained for when a landlord in Cameron, Texas called to complain a tenant had several venomous snakes in his apartment near a middle school.
They said the tenant admitted he had snakes and allowed the Game Wardens and Milam County Sheriff’s Office deputies inside his apartment.
They found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia inside and arrested the suspect.
After he was read his rights, he confessed that he had a monocled cobra, a green bush viper and approximately 25 rattlesnakes — all venomous — inside the apartment, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. They also seized rat snakes and bull snakes, all non-venomous.
The suspect, whose name wasn’t released, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. He was also cited for lack of a non-indigenous snake permit and hunting license.
The snakes were turned over to a licensed permit holder who is equipped to care for them, TPWD said.
