East Calder residents are being asked for their views on the proposed a circus training and community space.

The proposed development aims to regenerate the currently underused site, which was previously home to the Oakbank Oil Works.

The circus base will serve as a training school and community space, offering state-of-the-art facilities for artists from all over the world.

Operating under the Big Kid Circus brand, the location has been carefully selected for its proximity to Edinburgh Airport and major road links, making it an ideal home for performers and visitors alike.

In addition to providing a dedicated space for circus arts, if approved the long-term vision for the phased development is to implement a phased development that will deliver a “vibrant, sustainable space that combines a multi-functional training school, community amenities, and a connection to nature like ponds, trails, and green spaces”.

Two community consultation events will be held, offering local people the chance to learn more about the proposals, meet the project team and share feedback.

These will take place at Oakbank Bowling Club and will take place on February 26 and April 3. Both events run from noon to 7.30pm.

Julia Kirilova, event manager at Big Kid Entertainment, said: “We are excited to share our plans for a sustainable and inclusive circus and performing arts space, becoming the only one of its kind in Scotland.

“Our proposals represent our commitment to Scotland. Over the years, we have called it home and we now have the chance to set down roots and further develop our relationship with the local community.

“The views of local people are important to us, and we are proactively engaging with stakeholders to involve them in our plans.

“We look forward to welcoming people to our upcoming consultation events and importantly, capturing their feedback as we refine proposals ahead of a planning submission to West Lothian Council later this year.”
