(CNN) – References to cultural events like Black History Month and Pride Month have been removed in an update to Google Calendar’s default settings.

Among the excluded observance references were Women’s History Month, Jewish Heritage, Hispanic Heritage, Indigenous People Month and Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The changes prompted some to criticize the company.

A Google spokesperson said the changes were implemented last year as part of a broader revamp of the calendar tool based on user input.

The spokesperson said that, “Years ago, the calendar team started manually adding a broader set of cultural moments in a wide number of countries.”

Maintaining it was not sustainable, according to the spokesperson.
