Loic Remy won the Premier League with Chelsea and earned 30 caps for France.
But the former forward admits that not playing for either Rangers or Celtic is still something that stings, despite enjoying a stellar career that saw clubs splash out more than £50m to sign him. The now 38-year-old hung up his boots after a short spell with Brest in 2023, but represented a host of teams after bursting onto the scene with Lyon back in 2006, with whom he won Ligue 1 – however revealed that he was left with one big regret, never heading to the Scottish Premiership.
Speaking to Plejmo.com, Remy said: “I would’ve loved to have experienced a derby between Celtic and Rangers, I heard about the game when I moved to play in England and I’d love to experience one now in the crowd. You hear about the passion and the feeling behind it and that’s a great feeling for a fan but also a player.
“You get that feeling that losing isn’t an option and people in the street would even approach you to talk about the game. I love derbies like that and one day I’d love to go to Scotland to see that game in person.”
Remy made his name with his prolific and powerful displays at both Nice and Marseille, and was heavily linked with a host of top clubs in England – before finally making a surprise move to QPR for a club record fee of £8m in January 2013, where he earned an eye-watering £80,000 a week. Six goals in 14 games couldn’t save the London club from relegation to the Championship however, meaning Remy was on the move again – joining Newcastle United on loan, where he was named the club’s player of the year.
His sparkling showings caught the eye of Liverpool, but it was Chelsea who would pounce after Remy reportedly failed a medical – as they sealed a £10.5m deal where he became a Premier League winner. A short loan with Crystal Palace was then followed by stints in Turkey and Spain, before Remy called it a day
