Lidl has issued a recall for cheese products that could potentially cause high temperatures and illness. The budget supermarket chain has urged customers not to consume the affected product.

Lidl Northern Ireland has expanded its recall of three Deluxe Cheddar Cheese Wedges due to potential listeria contamination.

Symptoms caused by this bacterium can resemble flu symptoms, including high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

In rare instances, the infection can lead to serious complications such as meningitis. Certain individuals are more susceptible to listeria infections, including those over 65 years old, pregnant women and their unborn babies, infants less than one month old, and people with weakened immune systems, warns Lidl.

The recalled products include Deluxe Sriracha Cheddar Cheese Wedge, Deluxe Walnut Cheddar Cheese Wedge and Deluxe Oak Smoked Cheddar Cheese Wedge. The pack sizes are 150g and the best before dates are May 11, 2025.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) stated: “Lidl Northern Ireland is recalling the above products. Point of sale notices will be displayed where the products are sold. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products.”

Lidl has issued a statement urging customers, “If you have bought the above products do not eat them. Instead, return the products to where they were bought for a full refund. Any customers with queries or concerns can contact Lidl NI Customer Services on 0289 568 4888.”

The chain, which competes with the likes of Aldi, Sainsbury’s, and Tesco, added: “Lidl wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused. Any customers with queries or concerns can contact our Customers Service Team.”

The FSA clarified that if an issue with a food product deems it unsellable, it may be “withdrawn” or “recalled”. The FSA informs consumers and local authorities about such issues through Product Recall Information Notices.
