More than a Year Later, FBI Seeks Help Identifying Power Plant Intruder

WINFIELD, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Investigators need your help identifying a man who gained access into the John Amos power plant in Winfield.

Federal investigators shared surveillance video with WSAZ, showing a man walking the halls at the John Amos power plant in Winfield for about 30 minutes.

Federal investigators said he wasn’t supposed to be there and are trying to figure out who he is and how he got in.

The incident happened on Dec. 30, 2023, but the surveillance video was shared with WSAZ on Monday.

WSAZ followed up with the FBI to ask why the lapse in time. An official with the FBI said they can’t comment on active investigations, but they’re really hoping the public will help them identify the man.

WSAZ’s Luke Hamilton also reached out to American Electric Power, the parent company of Appalachian Power, which owns the plant, about the investigation. AEP spokesperson Tammy Ridout responded with this statement: “We continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement as they continue their investigation and do not have any additional information to share at this time.”

WSAZ then followed up with additional questions, asking if any security improvements have been made, if the man could’ve been a former employee and about the uniform he was wearing.

A spokesperson responded, saying “This is an active investigation, and we don’t have any other information to share at this time.”

The FBI said there is a $10,000 reward for anyone who helps identify the man, leading to his arrest.
