Dogs are increasingly being treated as family members rather than just pets, with many owners choosing to spoil their furry companions in ways once reserved for children.

As more people opt for canine companionship over having children, homemade dog treats have become a growing trend, with pet parents, or ‘paw-ents’, preferring to whip up their own snacks rather than rely on store-bought options.

The shift towards DIY dog treats is evident online, with TikTok videos under the hashtag #HomemadeDogTreats racking up an impressive 138.3 million views. Meanwhile, searches for ‘how to make healthy dog treats’ have surged by 125 percent in just three months, reflecting a rising demand for nutritious, homemade alternatives.

With National Love Your Pet Day approaching on February 20, Dr Anna Foreman, Everypaw Pet Insurance’s in-house vet, has shared a simple yet healthy homemade dog treat recipe using just three ingredients: banana, oats, and xylitol-free peanut butter.

She said: “Making homemade dog treats is a way of showing love and affection, putting more time and energy into something their dog loves rather than a shop-bought alternative.”

However, she also warns pet owners to be mindful of toxic ingredients that can be “easily fatal in dogs.” Household staples such as macadamia nuts, grapes, and raisins should never be included in homemade treats, as they pose serious health risks.

What are the best recipes for healthy but delicious homemade dog treats?

The best homemade dog treats are simple, nutritious, and made with just a handful of wholesome ingredients. A mix of banana, oats, and a small amount of xylitol-free peanut butter can be shaped and baked into delicious, dog-friendly biscuits.

Other safe ingredients include grated carrots, egg, sweet potato, and a small amount of pumpkin— all of which provide added nutrients without harmful additives.

However, it is importance to use guidance from reputable organisations such as the RSPCA, PDSA, and the Kennel Club to ensure the treats they make are both safe and nutritious for their furry companions.

What ingredients must be avoided when baking dog treats?

While homemade dog treats can be a healthier alternative to store-bought options, pet owners must be cautious about the ingredients they use. Some common household foods can be highly toxic, and even fatal, to dogs.

Xylitol, a sugar substitute found in some peanut butter and sugar-free products, is extremely poisonous to dogs and should always be avoided. Theobromine, an ingredient in chocolate and coffee, is also dangerous in certain doses.

Other toxic foods include macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, and large amounts of avocado, all of which can cause serious health issues.

Experts stress that even small quantities of these ingredients can be harmful, reinforcing the importance of carefully selecting recipes and following trusted sources when preparing homemade dog treats.

What should be considered when baking homemade dog treats?

Dogs prone to pancreatitis should avoid excessive fat intake, as ingredients like butter, lard, and oil can trigger the condition. Though pancreatitis may present as mild abdominal pain, it can escalate into a severe, life-threatening illness.

Moderation is also key when it comes to treats. Overfeeding, particularly alongside a dog’s regular diet, can lead to weight gain and obesity, a growing issue in pets, especially older dogs with arthritis. Excess weight not only strains the heart but also significantly increases the risks associated with anaesthesia.

Unlike humans, dogs thrive on a consistent diet. Introducing unfamiliar foods can upset their digestive system, often resulting in issues like diarrhoea. Pet owners are urged to be mindful of what and how much they feed their furry companions.
