The winter months can be a worry for UK homes prone to damp and mould. But using a dehumidifier can help reduce condensation in your house, which is the main cause of mould and damp developing in the home.
Dehumidifiers pull in moisture and cool it into water vapour, which then gathers in a tank ready to be emptied. The Meaco Arete One 25L Low Energy Laundry Dehumidifier has proved a popular option for those looking to reduce moisture in their home.
The product boasts hundreds of reviews on Amazon, but it doesn’t come cheap. Although Amazon often offers the best deals on appliances, this gadget is an exception to the rule.
But Appliances Direct has reduced the dehumidifier to £192.99, which is £94 cheaper than Amazon, where it’s almost sold out.

Meaco specialises in dehumidifiers, and this is one of the brand’s largest models, capable of collecting up to 25 litres of water, the Mirror reports.

The dehumidifier works equally well in large or small homes, and its product description states it’s ‘ideal for up to 5-bed houses’.
A similar yet smaller gadget is the compact dehumidifier from Lakeland, which is priced at £34.99. Easily portable, this dehumidifier can be placed around the home- on a windowsill, in a corner, or by a door, which causes minimal disruption while treating minor condensation problems.
The Meaco device is ideal for dealing with larger or open-plan areas due to its larger size, reports the Mirror.
But while reducing condensation and preventing damp and mould is the prime function of a dehumidifier, they boast benefits beyond this.

They’re also useful for drying washing faster, which can be a painfully long process during winter. The Meaco gadget even has a laundry setting, making it easy to use alongside a washing rack.
It’s claimed to cost just around 7.6p per hour to run, which is significantly cheaper than using a tumble dryer – one of the most energy-consuming appliances in the home.
Customers who’ve purchased the device have shared their satisfaction in the review section on the Meaco website.
One satisfied customer shared: ”Superb. We have a Victorian three bed terraced house, with essentially four adults living in it, and we’ve had so many problems with condensation and mould. This dehumidifier pulls several litres a day out of the air, and the problems are gone.
“Plus, we no longer have to leave windows open for ventilation, so the house is warmer. Sure, it is big and chunky and looks like a robot and makes constant noise, but we don’t care because the house is now mould-free.”
Another added: ”This is an excellent product which really performs well. We live in an old house with stone walls, and condensation and mould were a huge problem for us in the cooler weather.
“This dehumidifier has solved the problem within days. Worth every penny.”
A third chimed in: ”Excellent product and wish I had bought one years ago. Deals with moisture in a 300-year-old house (shocked by how much there is). There is also a noticeable improvement in my asthma symptoms which always get worse in damp cold weather.”
However, some reviews have raised concerns about the noise levels of dehumidifiers. One reviewer commented: ”Expensive, a bit noisy (with Hepa filter fitted) but efficient.
“Large capacity tank (plus point) but can be a little messy emptying – OK if just sloshing down the sink but pouring into a container for re-use [is] not so good.”

If you’re dealing with condensation in a smaller property, a 12-litre dehumidifier like the Honeywell 12L/Day Dehumidifier might be a better fit for you.
Currently reduced from £189 to £129.95 on Amazon, this device is touted as ‘energy efficient’, costing from 5p per hour to run, and it also makes little noise, making it ideal for families or those working from home.
For homes struggling with excessive condensation in one particular area, a small dehumidifier could be all you need – the Lakeland 1L Compact Dehumidifier is priced at £34.99 and has a compact and portable design.
