BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -Kevin Ross is a police officer with the Bluefield West Virginia Police Department who has been protecting and serving his community since 2016.
When asked about being a Hometown Hero, Ross says he doesn’t put on the uniform for recognition.
“That’s pretty cool. You know, a lot of stuff we do, we don’t do it for recognition. We just do it because we try to put a smile on people’s faces. So, it’s not something that, you know, we basically just do not because we want somebody to say thank you, but just something we can help,” said Kevin Ross, WVVA Hometown Hero.
From Christmas with Shop with A Cop to volunteering for events such as the Social Studies Fair and making sure those in need have a warm place to sleep with food Ross says why he strives to help the community.
“Growing up, I mean, I watched my mom struggle and do what she had to do to provide for five of us. She did what she had to do, by any means, to make sure we were all taken care of. So, there was a lot of stuff that we wanted growing up that we didn’t get because we just couldn’t afford it, and I know how it made me feel, so I didn’t want to see somebody else go through the same thing I did growing up, and, like I said, I’ve been blessed enough to be able to help others,” said Ross.
Not only does Ross look up to his mom for always providing for him and his siblings, but his oldest brother as well.
“My oldest brother, he retired from the military, and I used to look up to him a lot. I actually wanted to go into the military at one time and, I mean, I just always looked up to him. He was the, more or less the man in the house there for a while. So, that’s really who I kind of looked up to,” continued Ross.
But in 2016 when Ross was given the opportunity at the department Lt. Aaron Crook took Ross under his wing. Ross says Crook always showed him the right way and unfortunately made the ultimate sacrifice in 2017 making sure his guys were safe. Ross says he tries to show the younger guys now the right way because Lt. Crook will always be remembered.
“ We have a lot of younger guys here now. We kind of play the big brother role, we try to. I mean, we have our moments. We take fishing trips, we play golf. We do a little bit of everything common to just kind of decompress and get away. It’s, like I said, it has its moments, it’s challenging at times, but I mean, we do what we got do to keep each other uplifted and keep the public safe,” said Ross.
It is Ross’s passion and dedication to his community that makes Kevin Ross a WVVA Hometown Hero.
