Members of Biggar Accordion & Fiddle Club were entertained at their latest meeting by the Màrtainn Skene Trio.

A fine selection of local players also entertained at Biggar Bowling Club including accordionists Allan Smith, Fiona Paul, Marshall Harkness, James Watson, Andrea Balderson, James Milner, John Weaks, Jim Gold, Cal Smith, Scott Wilson, Sheena Dickson, Charlie Todd, Fin Hope, Shand Morino and BBC weather presenter Calum MacColl who was paying the club his first visit.

On fiddle there was Gilbert Logan and Sarah Wilson and on piano Jim Gold, Fiona Paul, Keith Dickson and Scott Wilson. On drums were Tom Hope, Ian McRobert, Billy Hutton and Alex Lyall.

Ex Mod Gold Medalist, Calum MacColl, also demonstrated his versatility by giving members a song.

The guest artistes for the afternoon were the Màrtainn Skene Trio, with Màrtainn from Glasgow leading on piano accordion, Colin Garvin from Livingston on piano and Nicky McMichan from Moffat on drums. Unusually Màrtainn was playing a bright sounding Ranco accordion which ideally suited his driving style of playing.

As a “West Coaster”, he is particularly comfortable playing pipe music, but is also adept at playing for Scottish Country dancing.

This was the Trio’s first visit to Biggar and certainly won’t be the last.

Next month the club welcomes back the Tom Orr Band on Sunday, March 9, at 2pm in the Biggar Bowling Club.
