AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin City Council recognized Huston-Tillotson University for its 150th anniversary during Thursday’s meeting.

The HBCU is the oldest university in the city of Austin.

In a resolution approved Thursday, city leaders called on the city manager to make improvements to the lighting, street banners and signage within the city’s African American Cultural District to improve accessibility to cultural landmarks.

“I really appreciate community members who never backed down and had no problem whatsoever in sending the exact same email at least six times about the need,” Austin City Councilmember Natasha Harper-Madison (District 1) said. “That speaks directly to the community’s commitment to being a part of the inevitable growth of our community.”

The council also celebrated the 150th anniversary of Ebenezer Baptist Church at Thursday’s meeting.
