Labour has lifted the suspension of a senior councillor after domestic assault charges against him were dropped. It is understood Stephen McCabe, who was leader of Inverclyde Council before he was charged, is back in the party fold.

McCabe stepped down as leader and was suspended by Labour after his initial arrest last year. He pled not guilty following allegations of domestic assault and threatening or abusive behaviour.

A spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said this week: “After careful consideration of all of the relevant facts and circumstances, the Procurator Fiscal decided that the case should not proceed at this time. The Crown reserves the right to proceed in the future.”

McCabe has been a Labour member since 1983 and was a district councillor between 1992 and 1996. He has been a councillor on Inverclyde council since 1999 and was first appointed leader in 2007.
