Rescue operation saves 14 people in Lashmeet

LASHMEET, W.Va. -Swift water rescue teams from multiple counties helped with a rescue operation in the Lake Shawnee area of Lashmeet.

The mission was to help evacuate 14 individuals from the Shawnee Valley Mobile Home Park off Old Beckley Road.

Swimmers from Charleston, South Charleston, Oak Hill, Ansted, West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, Princeton Rescue Squad and many more all helped in the effort.

Yesterday’s heavy downpours caused the water to cover the road, making it impassable for emergency services to help residents out of their flooded homes.

“The waters just started coming up with all the flooding, and the runoff from the from the mountains and the streams started to come up all day since about three o’clock, we’ve been out on water rescues,” said Mark Brooks, CEO of Princeton Rescue Squad. “At this point in time, and we’re still out here now (Lashmeet). There’s still several going on throughout the county our best to do it as quickly and safely as we can.”

In the early morning hours of Sunday, crews finally were able to set up a rope and trolley system to bring people across the water using rafts.

According to Mercer County Emergency Managment, all 14 individuals have been relocated.
