Snow and freezing rain are set to hit Dumfries and Galloway.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning and fears the wintry weather will create difficult driving conditions and lead to travel delays.

The warning, which covers the majority of the region, is due to come into effect at 3am on Tuesday and last until 12noon.

A Met Office forecaster said: “Snow flurries will probably turn heavier for a time during Tuesday morning, leading to a covering of snow in some places. Most likely in the zero to one cm range in lowland areas, whilst one to five cm is possible in places above 200m.

“In addition, freezing rain, especially in the southern part of the region, is likely to cause icy surfaces in a few places and could make for difficult driving conditions, even on treated roads.

“Freezing rain and snow is expected to ease by Tuesday afternoon, with conditions improving.”

The Met Office is warning people to allow extra time for their journeys and have some simple essentials, such as warm clothing, an ice scraper and de icer, on hand.

Anyone walking should leave home a little earlier than normal and try to use main roads which are more likely to have been treated.
