Motherwell are expected to announce former player Mitchell van der Gaag as boss today, after German ‘front-runner’ Torsten Lieberknecht is believed to have ruled himself out.
Lieberknecht was ‘spotted’ at Fir Park watching the Lanarkshire side’s 3-0 Premiership defeat to Ross County on Saturday, sparking rumours, but the 51-year-old is reported to have said he isn’t interested in the job vacated by Stuart Kettlewell.
Former Newcastle United hero Temur Ketsbaia was also seriously linked with the vacancy at Fir Park.

Dutchman van der Gaag, 53, who scored to keep Motherwell in the top flight in 1997, during a two-year spell at Fir Park, has been constantly linked.
He left his assistant manager’s position at Manchester United in July having been appointed alongside Erik ten Hag in 2022.

Lieberknecht had been firmly installed as favourite yesterday, having been in charge most recently at SV Darmstadt in his homeland.
But van der Gaag looks set for an emotional return to Lanarkshire, having previously been linked with the jo in 2014, when Ian Baraclough was appointed.
