Martin O’Neill has slaughtered one of Bayern Munich’s star players with a savage one-liner after Celtic’s Champions League elimination.
Bavarian defender Dayot Upamecano is often referred to by many as one of Europe’s premiere centre-backs. The 26-year-old stars for France and has been an ever present in Munich since his move there four years ago. So pleased are they with his performances, the Bundesliga giants are even in advanced in talks to tie him down to a new contract.
He’s considered important part of the squad for present and future, with both Vincent Kompany and club’s management happy with his performances. But former Celtic manager was far from impressed during the 1-1 Champions League draw at the Allianz Arena. The Frenchman and his defensive partner Kim Min-Jae were at sixes and sevens for Nicolas Kuhn’s opener. And as for his skills with the ball, the ex-Aston Villa gaffer had a few cutting words.
Speaking as a pundit on Amazon Prime Video, Martin O’Neill quipped: “Somebody has told that Upamecano he can actually play the ball – well, he can’t.”

Presenter Gabby Logan, along with fellow pundits Neil Lennon and former AC Milan maestro Clarence Seedorf shared a chuckle. O’Neill was also effusive in his praise for Brendan Rodgers’s players calling their performance “absolutely fantastic from start to finish” and blasting Bayern as “almost lethargic”.
