Ayrshire is set to be hit by further heavy showers with up to 70mm of rain falling on Friday, February 21.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain covering parts of Ayrshire, Lanarkshire and Dumfries and Galloway.

Running from 6am until 6pm on Friday, residents are being warned to expect travel delays, difficult driving conditions and potential flooding.

North Ayrshire is expected to avoid the worst of the weather but areas including Ayr, Prestwick, the Irvine Valley, Cumnock, Doon Valley, Girvan, Maybole and Carrick are included in the warning area.

Heavy rain showers are expected throughout the day on Friday with 30-40mm possible in the space of six hours and potentially up to 70mm by the time the rain eases on Friday evening.

Journey times may be longer with spray and flooding possible on roads while flooding is also “likely” for “a few homes and businesses”.

According to the Met Office’s Impact Matrix Guide, the warning has a medium likelihood and a low impact.

As part of their warning, the Met Office said: “Following a wet few days, further spells of heavy rain are expected through the course of Friday.

“High ground is most likely to see the highest rainfall totals, with 30-40 mm possible in the space of 6 hours or so, and close to 70 mm by the time rain eases Friday evening.

“Check if your property could be at risk of flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

“People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

“Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”
