Dumfries and Galloway could be hit with winds of up to 70mph on Friday.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning covering the west of the region, with travel delays and power cuts possible.

The warning is due to come into effect at 8am on Friday and last until 3pm.

A Met Office forecaster said: “Southerly winds will increase on Friday morning, with gusts of 50-60mph likely for exposed coasts and hills of western Britain.

“Some parts of the warning area may see gusts of 70mph for a time. Winds ease from the west during the afternoon.”

People are advised to allow extra time for any journeys they have to make and prepare for the possibility of a power cut by getting torches and power packs ready.

The forecaster added: “If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
