Scotland hero John McGinn says he has no plans to spruce up his appearance, despite constant ribbings from his teammates.
The Aston Villa star, who is in line to make his 500th career appearance when his side welcome Liverpool on February 19, is known throughout the game for his down-to-earth attitude – despite earning millions as a key player for the Premier League big guns. But he insists he’ll never change his dress sense, even after joking it makes him look like a painter.
McGinn, who has scored 20 times in 73 caps for the national team, was quizzed by ex Rangers star Alan Hutton – a former teammate of his at Aston Villa – on TNT Sports. Hutton said: “We were in the team together and probably 90 percent of the year you would turn up in just shorts and a hoodie. But you see these guys coming in, they must’ve raised the bar,” to which McGinn joked: “I’m getting worse!”
A disbelieving Hutton replied: “You can’t get any worse, surely?” Before the former Hibs and St Mirren ace continued: “I’ve stopped the shorts as much. I do love a t-shirt and shorts, I did used to get pelters but I get battered more now. It’s too much with them all, every day is a fashion shoot. Not even the new lads, everyone in general. It’s just the way that football is going.
“Designer tracksuits, big posh trainers, jackets. We’ve got a few fashion gurus like Leon (Bailey), Amadou (Onana), they all love their style. Ross (Barkley) and Ollie (Watkins) have a bash every day.” Hutton then asked if McGinn had ever been tempted to spruce up his appearance – and the answer couldn’t have left him in any doubt.
John laughed: “No, absolutely not. I look like a painter every day and they all laugh at me, but I don’t care. I’m just like, so what lads? When we go on the Christmas do or have a night out and I have a wee bit more of a bash they are all surprised. Whereas if I did that every day they’d just be like, same old. I won’t change in that sense, and I think with the way football’s going I’m in the wrong era.”
