Mr Shock Jock Jason Cundy mocked Celtic’s agonising Champions League exit in a bizarre radio rant and taunted: It’s glorious failure.
Nicolas Kuhn’s second-half opener looked set to take Bayern Munich into extra-time after a heroic display at the Allianz Arena. But sub Alphonso Davies broke the Hoops’ hearts with a scrappy 94th-minute equaliser to deny them in the last kick of the game. The odds were firmly stacked against Brendan Rodgers’ side before a ball was kicked, but the Scottish champions proved they can compete with Europe’s creme de la creme after producing one of their best-ever away performances.
Celts have earned huge plaudits worldwide but loudmouth pundit Cundy couldn’t resist sticking the boot in with his predictable ‘Has anyone seen?!’ jibe. The talkSPORT wind-up merchant mercilessly trolled the Hoops by laughing: “Has anyone seen Celtic in the Champions League. Has anyone seen Rod Stewart? You boys took one hell of a beating. Neil Lennon, John Hartson, Jim White, Alan Brazil, Ange Postecoglou, Kenny Dalglish, Lewis Capaldi, haggis, Shebahn Aherne, the Hoops, Susan Boyle, Irn Bru, Tennent’s Lager, Scotty Brown, bagpipes, Loch Ness Monster, can you hear me? Your boys took one hell of a beating. Parkhead, Henrik Larsson, can you hear me, Celtic?”
Sidekick and co-host Jamie O’Hara couldn’t believe what he was hearing after Celts went toe-to-toe with one of football’s heavyweights, hitting out: “You’re out of order. You’re horrible.” But while confessing the Treble-chasers were the better team, former Chelsea man Cundy refused to dish out much sympathy for the devastated Parkhead side. JC: “Well, football’s horrible. She’s a cruel mistress. Credit to Celtic, didn’t take their chances. Wasted chances. Bayern Munich were terrible. Celtic were brilliant, yet they come away with nothing. Absolutely nothing, other than credit. What does credit give you? Yeah, well done. A pat on the back. They were the better side, but it’s glorious failure. I’m sorry. It’s glorious failure. They can be proud, every Celtic fan there will be so proud of what they’ve seen. And rightly so, they were the better side and deserved to win. They were desperately unlucky. But they can concede with 30 seconds left. They could’ve been 2-0 up at half-time. I mean, come on. This is football at the highest level. Do you know what? I wanted Celtic to win the game. People won’t believe this – I wanted Celtic to win and get something out of this. But that means nothing. It’s about the score and aggregate. It’s glorious failure for Celtic. They’ve come so close. You can talk about all the money spent, but tonight, they showed that money against one of European royalty, they can go toe-to-toe. But the reality is, they come up short. They should’ve won that game three or four.”
JO: “Come on. Celtic are a huge football club. But in terms of Bayern Munich as football club, the wages, the levels they’ve been playing at for long periods of time. To do what Celtic have done… it’s unbelievable what they’ve done.”
JC: “Okay, here you go. There’s a pat on back, that’s all they are going to get. They can get all the praise and swim in all of the glory, but at the end of the river, it comes to a dead end. They should’ve won the game. It’s glorious failure. It’s harsh, but they should’ve won the game. They’ll have regrets. The Bayern Munich players were going round embarrassed, and so they should be. They were a disgrace. Celtic were absolutely superb. How many times have Celtic played in a final against team lower than them, they should’ve won the final and Celtic ended up winning it? How many times have teams gone to Parkhead and given Celtic a game, yet Celtic come away with the trophy… and everyone goes ‘they had their chances and didn’t take them’. I guarantee there are dozens of teams up in Scotland going ‘we had that chance, we could’ve knocked them out of the cup’… this is what happens when the better team survives and they’ve got that little bit more quality. Unfortunately, Celtic have come up against that. That’s what they do against sides in the lower leagues – exactly the same thing.”
JO: “I feel for them. The way they moved the ball around, at times I thought it was Bayern Munich. They were by far the better team.”
Cundy’s desperate attempt at being funny went down like a lead balloon as one punter blasted: “Cundy saying that Bayern were a disgrace and that they should be ashamed, and that they were terrible etc. etc. is just him trying to take everything away from what a great performance Celtic put on. Celtic played great, quick passing, fast attractive football, and at times cut Bayern open, if it was Barcelona that did exactly the same thing, he’d be saying how well Barca outplayed them.”
Another hit out: “Mocking Celtic is embarrassing. This man is just a sad human.” A third fizzed: “Embarrassing from Cundy, what an absolute muppet.”
