The return of an EastEnders legend was shrouded in secrecy, leaving cast members astonished by the unexpected comeback.

As EastEnders marks its 40th anniversary, fans were thrilled to see the iconic Angie Watts, portrayed by Anita Dobson, make a dramatic reappearance after 37 years.

In a poignant scene, Sharon, played by Letitia Dean, is visited by a vision of her mother Angie who implores her to “Use that voice and you start screaming for help.”

Kellie Bright, known to viewers as Linda Carter, confessed that she was completely in the dark about Anita’s return as Angie. In a candid Instagram video, Kellie shared her reaction with followers.

She said: “So just like many other people, I watched the EastEnders 40th anniversary episode tonight. And there she was, in all her glory. I had no idea when I posted that picture today of me and Anita Dobson that Angie Watts was going to make an appearance. I am blown away.”

A third fan quipped, “Such a brilliant episode,” about the latest instalment. EastEnders’ executive producer Chris Clenshaw spoke about the return of a legendary character: “Angie Watts is undoubtedly one of EastEnders most formidable and iconic landlady’s.”

He continued to praise the actress behind Angie Watts: “Since the very first episode, Anita instantly created a character that the audience adored and she not only shaped EastEnders into the show it is today, but also had a huge impact on British television.”

Clenshaw revealed the excitement behind the scenes: “Anita was of course top of our ultimate wish list when we were discussing what we would love to include in our special anniversary week, so it was the best birthday present we could ever receive when she said yes.”

Reflecting on the significance of her return, he added: “Watching Angie Watts grace the halls of The Queen Victoria, 40 years to the day she made her first appearance in Walford, is a day we will never forget as we all celebrate this show that has played such an important part in British television.
