Dziedzic added: “With its gripping crimes, fascinating characters, and captivating cast – led by the brilliant Ben Miller – the show continues to surprise and delight both ardent fans and newcomers alike. Over time, it has truly found its own identity beyond the original, and we can’t wait for viewers to see what’s coming in the next chapter.”

Miller, who portrays the eminent Cambridge Professor Jasper Tempest, will be joined once again by Frances de la Tour as Adelaide Tempest, his on-screen mother.

The stellar cast includes Zoe Wanamaker taking on the role of Zelda Radclyffe, the Professor’s aunt, while Juliet Stevenson returns as Dr Helena Goldberg.

The series, which is modelled after the Belgian series of the same title, revolves around an outstanding criminologist with obsessive-compulsive disorder aiding the police in cracking complex cases.

Commenting on the renewal, Miller shared that he was “beyond thrilled” to be part of the upcoming fifth season, hinting that his character would face “his most baffling case yet: romance”.

He added: “The fact that audiences worldwide have embraced the show so warmly is hugely rewarding, and we’re already brimming with ideas to make Series 5 even more quirky, heartfelt, and surprising,” said Miller. “Here’s to another season of baffling crime, dreaming spires, and ironing that tweed….”

ITV has announced that the upcoming fifth series will deliver several surprises with six new episodes introducing “unexpected new relationships and more complex crimes for the Professor and police unit to tackle”.

Viewers can anticipate a plotline involving a “boxing match that takes a bloody turn and a series of inexplicable sudden deaths at an upmarket spa”.

With significant challenges ahead, many beloved characters will be forced to make hard decisions, and the situations facing Professor T and his squad will be more intense than ever.

Jo McGrath, Executive Producer and CCO of Eagle Eye Drama, further encouraged excitement for the future instalments: “Professor T continues to go from strength to strength. It’s a joyous series to make, reflected in the number of returning core cast and crew.”

She also hinted at a compelling end to the upcoming series: “Season 5 will prove to be a momentous one for Professor T, both personally and professionally, and the series will climax with one of its trademark series finale episodes guaranteed to keep audiences glued.”
