An injured person was rescued from a Scots mountain range during a complex near 10 hour SOS mission in extreme conditions.

Heroic crews battled through the night to save a casualty who vanished on the Five Sisters of Kintail in the Highlands. A complex operation saw Mountain Rescue Teams and a Coastguard Rescue helicopter all scrambled to the scene.

The alarm was raised on Wednesday at 4.30pm to reports of a missing person. Kintail Mountain Recue crews assembled to search for the casualty. The eagle-eyed rescue chopper team was able to locate the casualty on the south side of the ridge in very steep and dangerous ground.

Kintail Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) have told how the search quickly turned into an emergency rescue mission – with extremely high winds and deteriorating weather stopping the helicopter from being able to help.

Brave teams constructed a rigging system to haul the casualty to safer ground. The MRT’s medic was able to treat the casualty for their injuries.

The team were able to get the casualty safely back at the base in Morvich by around 6am on Thursday morning. They were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Pictures from the hair-raising rescue show crews navigating the steep ridge in the dark. The images show the difficult conditions with heavy downpours battering the iconic Munros site.

A statement from Kintail Mountain Rescue posted on Facebook praised the team.

It read: “This was a sterling effort by multiple agencies and the amazing volunteers from Kintail MRT. We wish the casualty a speedy recovery and safe travels home.

“Kintail Mountain Rescue Team is made up entirely of volunteers. We are on call 365 days a year, 24 hours a day to help anyone who is in trouble in the mountains.”
