BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – As we continue to recover from the recent flooding in the Two Virginias, experts are reminding you to be mindful of how your health can be affected by these drastic conditions.
“Respiratory illnesses are common in floodwaters and also some gastrointestinal illnesses, parasites, things like that,” said Dr. Robert Snidow, Health Officer for the Mercer County Health Department.
Dr. Snidow explained that cuts or bruises received during flooding may need more care than you think.
“Well, tetanus is always a possibility with cuts, abrasions, lacerations. So, if one walks through floodwater, wades through floodwater, they always run the risk of getting cut by a sharp object, tree branch, metal, something in the water. So, tetanus shots are recommended, tetanus boosters are recommended every 10 years for adults,” continues Dr. Snidow.
The doctor with the Mercer County Health Department is asking you to be prepared, protected, and aware any time flooding comes through, and to get the care you need afterwards.
“Be mindful, usually they need to wear, obviously the more covering the better, rubber boots, thick pants, things like that, but after being exposed to floodwaters, examine for cuts and abrasions, and if need be come get a tetanus booster…typically we give TDAP boosters for adults, TDAP meaning Tetanus Diphtheria and Pertussis every 10 years,” Dr. Snidow added.
