Viewers of Countryfile were taken aback by an unexpected segment in the latest episode of the BBC wildlife show.

Hosts Adam Henson and Charlotte Smith led viewers on a journey to the Stirling Bull Sales in Scotland, a prestigious event in the farming calendar.

Over two days, they observed around 300 pedigree bulls at the sales auction, an event that attracts thousands of buyers, sellers, and enthusiasts eager to see and bid on the country’s finest livestock.

During the early evening broadcast, Adam teamed up with local farmer Graeme Fraser to prepare his prized Aberdeen Angus bulls for sale, documenting their journey throughout the event. Meanwhile, Charlotte explored the buying process, learning how bidders catch the auctioneer’s attention and secure a top-quality bull for their herds, as reported by the Express.

The audience also got a glimpse of the woman behind the camera capturing stunning images of the prize bulls, and a detailed look at the caterers, vets, and auctioneers who ensure the event runs smoothly.

However, viewers were particularly intrigued when Adam shed light on the stringent criteria the bulls must meet to enter the auction, including a rigorous health inspection with vet Charles Marwood.

The segment started with an explanation: “This is the business end really, it’s really important that the bulls have two fully descended testicles which are symmetrical with no lumps or bumps and then we measure the testicles. Each breed varies with age and circumference, and this one is 43 centimetres”.

Adam asked, “Is that good? ” The veterinarian replied, “Yes, that’s above average for his breed.”

Adam added: “And actually, that’s where the money is actually, isn’t it? Because he’s going to produce calves, so that’s essential”. The veterinarian concluded, “This guy next year should be settling 95% of his females over a nine-week period so if he’s not good down there then he won’t be reaching those figures”.

The impromptu inspection shocked viewers, who shared their reactions on X (formerly Twitter).

One user suggested, “There needs to be a trigger warning for this show in future #countryfile.”

Another viewer, who was eating during the episode, chimed in: “I was eating my tea in front of that #countryfile”, while another quipped: “#countryfile How to mix a load of bull with a load of b***s [cry-laughing emoji].”

On the other hand, some enjoyed the episode, as one fan noted: “Really enjoyed this episode, great atmosphere in the sale ring #countryfile #stirlingbullsales.”

After the episode aired, Adam revealed that several of Graeme’s bulls won rosettes at the auction, marking it the most successful visit the farmer had experienced throughout his career.
