Daniel Sturridge had a moment to forget live on Sky Sports last night after the pundit made an embarrassing slip-up.

The ex-Liverpool and Man City striker was part of a star-studded panel alongside Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards covering Sunday’s box-office clash at the Etihad. Sturridge has become a fan favourite with many armchair fans since making his debut for the broadcaster in 2023, adding a mixture of humour and quality analysis.

But the former England international made an embarrassing blunder during Super Sunday as goals from Mo Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai had the Premier League leaders flying at the break. Asked if soon-to-be-disposed champions City would be able to mount a second-half comeback, Sturridge said: “They’ve been prying away and giving themselves opportunities.

“But when they’re getting crosses in the box, there’s not that presence in the box to get on the end of it. So, we might end up seeing Haaland at some stage in the game.”

However, Norwegian goal machine Erling Haaland was left out of the squad as the Man City super striker watched on from the stands due to a fitness issue. That left Sky Sports presenter David Jones with no option but to interrupt and awkwardly correct Sturridge.

He said: “Not Haaland today because he’s, of course, missing. But maybe there might be one or two options they can turn to.” As always, the unforgiving world of social media was quick to latch on to the gaffe. One fan posted on X: “It’s his one job to know who’s injured and who’s on the bench. No excuses it’s absolutely basic.”

Another wrote: “How can you be a pundit yet not know who is even playing?” While a third joked: “Someone give Daniel Sturridge a team sheet.”

But the 35-year-old was offered some sympathy as one viewer pointed out: “Sturridge is genuinely excellent in his analysis and adds character and personality to it. He made a mistake. Who cares.” Another jumped to his defence: “Every pundit has made a mistake tbf.” And a third added: “Sturridge is quality. One mistake means nothing.”
