Millions of UK households continue to rely on Freeview for their entertainment needs, and it’s easy to see why. Unlike Sky and Virgin Media, Freeview doesn’t require monthly fees or long-term contracts.
However, a new contender has emerged that could potentially dethrone Freeview. Freely, which launched last spring, offers over 50 live channels and hours of on-demand content via a broadband connection, eliminating the need for an old-fashioned aerial.
Much like Sky’s smart Glass TV, Freely uses the internet instead of an over-the-air signal. Interestingly, Freely is owned by the same team behind Freeview, making it an ideal choice for those who can’t or don’t want to install an aerial.
Other features include the ability to pause live TV for up to 15 minutes, receive full content recommendations, and view what’s currently airing and what’s next via a main and mini TV guide. All you need is a basic broadband connection to get started with this smart system.
The only major drawback when switching to Freely is that you need a compatible TV, as standard screens can’t be upgraded. Initially, only a few screens came with Freely built-in, but that’s quickly changing, reports the Mirror.

The number of manufacturers teaming up with Freely continues to grow, with Toshiba, Hisense, Panasonic, and Sharp already on board, and now Metz is joining the ranks.
Metz has announced the launch of its Freely-powered TVs, boasting QLED screens, Dolby Atmos, and comprehensive smart features, including seamless access to popular apps like Netflix, Disney+, and iPlayer.
Additionally, the TVs incorporate METZ Eye Care technology, designed to reduce eye strain and enable extended viewing sessions. The new lineup includes a 65-inch model priced at £659, as well as smaller 55-inch (£489) and 50-inch (£429) options, all available at Euronics stores across the UK.
A 43-inch version is set to follow in April, priced at £379. Rob Peacock, representing METZ UK, said: “As one of the longest-established consumer electronics manufacturers and TV producers in Europe, we pride ourselves on delivering premium design and outstanding technology, all packaged at an affordable price.
“We have now taken the decision to offer a five-year warranty on these models, to demonstrate how much confidence we have in the quality of our products.”
