The Haill Six Incorporated Trades of Kirkcudbright held their annual Burns Supper on Saturday night at Arden House Hotel when chairman, Deacon Convener Ian D Swan welcomed a full house with guests from Irvine, York and Newcastle in the audience.
The haggis was piped in by former Pipe Major, Ian Weymss, carried by Graham Hewitt and addressed by ex-Deacon Convener Brian Thomson. General Clerk Rev Graham Finch said grace in his own unique, bespoke stye. Graham and his wife Louise provided the musical accompaniment and led the community singing.
Opening the toasts for the evening, Dr John Ridgeway-Wood, a professional organ player of some standing, toasted the Haill Six Incorporated Trades. In his well-researched and humorous toast, he reflected on the high profile of the town. Dr Ridgeway-Wood told the audience that in his long and varied career as a musician, he had played the organ at gangster Ronnie Kray’s funeral.
The Immortal Memory of Robert Burns was proposed by retired journalist Steve Norris. His toast was well balanced and easy listening. He described the humanity of the Bard whose work was far reaching, affecting politicians and leaders in the USA and Russia.
Recitations on the evening were performed by George Whan who gave a flawless rendition of Tam O’Shanter, followed by Address to the Deil, two of the Bard’s greatest works.
Gordon Halliday toasted the Lasses with Kate Kaye replying in a two very funny toasts. General Clerk Ian McIntyre wound up the evening’s proceedings with a vote of thanks.
