(CNN) – Astronomers say they have spotted a dazzling light show from the Milky Way’s black hole.

The astronomers spotted the activity using the James Webb Space Telescope.

Researchers say they saw a rapid-fire display that included short flashes and longer blindingly bright flares of light on a daily basis.

A study describing the findings appeared earlier this week in the astrophysical journal, Letters.

Scientists say while black holes are invisible, the flares spotted were unleashed by a swirling disk of hot gas and dust.

Astronomers believe the flares are coming from the inner edge of the disk just beyond the black hole’s horizon.

They say these observations could explain how black holes behave and the ways they feed on their surroundings.
