Scottish sensation Susan Boyle stepped on to the Britain’s Got Talent stage in 2009 and delivered an audition that left the world astonished.

The Blackburn native’s season 3 audition has been praised by BGT as “one of the most unforgettable auditions” in the show’s history. Her breathtaking performance stunned both the audience and judges – Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan, and Amanda Holden – taking them by surprise.

As she introduced herself, Susan described herself as a “nearly 48-year-old” who was “unemployed but still looking,” adding with a touch of humour that she had “never been married” and “never been kissed”.

Her introduction, playful personality, and golden evening dress led many viewers to underestimate her. When Susan confidently stated her dream was to be as successful as musical theatre legend Elaine Paige, the camera captured the audience reacting with skeptical and puzzled expressions.

However the moment she began singing ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ from Les Misérables, the atmosphere transformed.

The crowd went silent in awe, as host Anthony McPartlin stated: “You didn’t expect that, did you? No!” The audience and the judges took to their feet, giving Susan a standing ovation, as many of them were reduced to tears.

Susan went on to secure second place in the competition, after sadly missing out on the number one spot to dance troupe, Diversity. However, this did not stop Susan from becoming a global superstar.

Susan has gone on to release eight studio albums throughout the course of her career, including her debut, The Gift in 2010, Someone to Watch Over Me in 2011, Standing Ovation: The Greatest Songs from the Stage in 2012, Home for Christmas in 2013, Hope in 2014, A Wonderful World in 2016 and Ten in 2019.

She also went on tour on several occasions, first with the rest of the BGT 2009 finalists, as well as her 2013 and 2014 tour, Susan Boyle in Concert.”

Susan had previously returned to the Britain’s Got Talent stage to perform, as well as taking part in the 2019 special – America’s Got Talent: The Champions. Sadly she did not win this time around either, but did receive the famous golden buzzer from Spice Girl Mel B during her audition.
