As Pope Francis remains in hospital, fighting pneumonia in both lungs, many have cast an uncertain eye towards the future of the Vatican. The Vatican leader was in critical condition over the weekend, but an update this morning stated that last night ‘went well’ and that he was now ‘resting’.

If the current Pope passes away, the Vatican’s cardinals will elect a successor, which will be signalled via the famous smoke of the Sistine Chapel’s chimney.

But as we look to the possible future of a new Pope, it’s worth a glance at the long past of the immense institution of the Catholic Church, and each of its leaders.

So, what is the role of the Pope, and who has held this title in the past?

What is the role of the Pope?

The title ‘Pope’ comes from the ancient Greek word for father – ‘pappas’. The Pope is therefore seen as the father of the Catholic Church.

Originally, the term was given to a number of bishops, but it soon came to apply solely to the bishop of Rome and leader of the Vatican. There have been 266 popes to date, starting with St. Peter in 32 AD.

In Christianity, St. Peter the Apostle was a disciple of Jesus Christ, recognised in the early church as the leader of the 12 disciples and by the Roman Catholic Church as the first of its unbroken succession of popes.

In modern times, the Pope acts as the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church worldwide, leading religious ceremonies, interpreting doctrine, and advocating for social justice issues.

He is also the head of state for Vatican City, engaging in international diplomacy and using his influence to address global concerns like poverty, climate change, and human rights violations.

While Francis is the 266th pope, you may be led to wonder who the other 265 Vatican leaders were. Here is a full list of every single pope since the year 32 AD.
