HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT/Gray News) – A deputy was shot and killed while responding to a domestic call in Mississippi.
Hinds County Sheriff’s Office said Deputy Martin Shields, Jr. and another deputy responded to a domestic call at a home in Terry, Mississippi.
When they arrived, Eric Brown, 42, shot Shields, according to authorities.
Brown worked at the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office for about 9 months.
“Deputy Shields died a hero. He died while responding to a call for service to assist someone in need. He fulfilled his assignment and his God-given mission on earth. Pray for his family, his friends, the many lives he touched, and the men and women of the HCSO as we all prepare for a final salute,” Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said.
Jones said he and Shields had just “shook hands” on a call where they were both responding to reports of a capsized boat before Shields responded to the domestic call.
Jones said Brown died in the home and had a gunshot wound, but it is unknown if it was self-inflicted or if he had been shot by a deputy.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating this incident.
