FRANKFORT, Ky. (WSAZ) – Federal disaster aid has been approved for the deadly flooding that impacted much of eastern Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Monday.

Beshear said President Donald Trump approved his request for an Expedited Major Disaster Declaration. That will include public assistance for local governments and individual assistance for Kentuckians in 10 counties, including Pike County.

The other counties approved are Breathitt, Clay, Harlan, Knott, Lee, Letcher, Martin, Owsley and Perry.

As of Monday, the death toll throughout Kentucky had risen to 22 people, with Pike County among the affected counties.

The federal approval makes immediate-need and cleaning and sanitizing money open to those who qualify.

“We are thankful to President Trump and his administration for approving this funding,” Beshear said in a release. “This support will be a big help for our families and communities as they recover and rebuild from yet another terrible storm.”
