Drivers who own certain cars are being made aware of the higher tax rates they will face in April.

The Government’s changes to the UK’s vehicle tax system will see Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates double for high-emissions models which are set to increase by up to £2,745.

The higher tax rates may also have an impact of the types of cars drivers purchase in the future as affect vehicle tax is set to double for some brand new models..

Cars emitting over 255g/km of CO2 will pay almost £3000 more to use from April 1. This will increase first-year VED costs to an eye-watering £5,490 per annum for some in a major blow for road users, drivers and motorists nationwide.

Currently drivers with high value cars pay £410. This will increase to £425. If your car costs more than £40,000 brand new then you must pay this expensive car supplement for the second to sixth year your car is on the road.

Cars with higher emissions are amongst those being targeted. If your car was built between 2001 and 2017, then your car tax is based on how many emissions your vehicle produces, according to Birmingham Live.
