The Labour Government has been blasted after it was announced that the energy price cap will increase by 6.4 per cent in April.
Regulator Ofgem said the average bill on a standard tariff will go up by an average £111 a year to £1,849.
The SNP said Keir Starmer should “apologise to voters for breaking his promises” after the Labour PM pledged energy bills would be £300 lower by 2030 in the general election campaign.
The Greens said the Government should “finally break the link between global gas prices and electricity bills.”
SNP Westminster Leader Stephen Flynn said: “During the election, the Labour Party promised voters it would cut energy bills by £300 but instead it has increased them three times – and they are now almost £300 higher.
“Keir Starmer must apologise to voters for breaking his promises – and urgently outline what emergency steps he will take to reverse these huge increases to household bills.
“We were told things would get better in Broken Brexit Britain but under the Labour Party the cost of living is rising, unemployment is increasing and the UK economy is stagnating.
“People were understandably angry when the Labour governnent cut the winter fuel payment for 900,000 Scottish pensioners but now millions of families across Scotland will pay the price for this obscene Labour Party energy bill hike… The Prime Minister has lost control and he must urgently get a grip before we are all forced to pay even more.”
Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater said: “Slater said: “The fossil fuel executives are laughing their way to the bank and toasting eye watering profits, but households and families across our country are being plunged into poverty by a broken energy market.”
She continued: “Labour promised to cut costs, but this is the third increase in a row since Keir Starmer took office. It simply isn’t good enough. Labour are failing badly. People want to know when they will stop being hit with one increase after another.
“We need radical and urgent reform of our energy system, and to finally break the link between global gas prices and electricity bills.
Labour Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: “This is worrying news for many families. This Government is determined to do everything we can to protect people from the grip of fossil fuel markets.
“Expanding the Warm Home Discount can help protect millions of families from rising energy bills, offering support to consumers across the country.
“Alongside this, the way to deliver energy security and bring down bills for good is to deliver our mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower with homegrown clean power that we in Britain control.”
