A man has been arrested after a van packed with fireworks was set alight leaving terrified families in Clydebank having to flee their homes.

The incident happened on Braes Avenue, Clydebank at around 1am on Sunday, February 23, where emergency services rushed to the scene.

The vehicle burst into flames as locals were evacuated and roads closed as a precaution as firefighters battled to combat the blaze. Footage shared on social media showed fireworks exploding as the van burst into flames.

Horrified locals recalled thinking there had been ‘gunfire’ or an ‘explosion’ as the terror unfolded.

Now police have confirmed that a 19-year-old male has been arrested and charged in connection. He is due to appear in court on Wednesday.

A Police Scotland statement said: “A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a vehicle fire in Braes Avenue, Clydebank.

“The fire was reported around 1am on Sunday, 23 February 2025.

“The 19-year-old man is due to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Wednesday, 26 February, 2025.”
