A pensioner has been seriously injured following a crash in Irvine town centre yesterday (Monday) afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Eglinton Street at around 3.10pm following reports of a crash involving a car and a pedestrian.

A 77-year-old man, the pedestrian, was taken to Crosshouse Hospital, in Crosshouse, where is condition was described by police as ‘serious’ this morning (Tuesday).

The driver of the car, a white Mini Clubman, was uninjured.

Following police enquiries and crash investigation work, the road was closed for around four hours and reopened at around 7.15pm.

Police are now appealing for information or dashcam footage to assist with their enquiries.

Sergeant Gordon Stewart, from the Ayrshire Road Policing Unit, said: “Our enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances, and we are keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened.

“We are also asking anyone driving in the area at the time to check their dashcam to see if it has captured anything that could assist with our investigation.”

“If you can help, please call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1942 of Tuesday, February 24.”

Originally, police had reported that the incident took place almost two miles away on the A737.
