Tesco has decided to remove a feature from its app that enabled customers to pay for their shopping and scan their Clubcard in one simple step.
The current ‘Pay in-store’ feature within the Tesco app allows shoppers to scan a single QR code, facilitating both payment and Clubcard point collection simultaneously.
However, the supermarket giant has confirmed this feature will soon be discontinued, requiring customers to scan their Clubcard separately from their chosen payment method, the M.E.N reports.
The decision to phase out the ‘Pay in-store’ feature is due to the increasing popularity of alternative payment methods. As such, Tesco will withdraw this feature from its app starting Friday 7 March 2025.
In an email sent to customers announcing the change, Tesco stated: “To ensure we’re able to keep bringing you the best value and convenience, we’ve taken the difficult decision to remove the pay in-store feature, formally known as Tesco Pay+, from the Tesco app.
“Between now and 7 March, the pay in-store feature will be phased out, and any linked card details will be removed unless you’re using them for GetGo, Whoosh, or home delivery shopping.”
The message concluded with a reminder: “So, next time you’re in store, you’ll need to pay separately after scanning your Clubcard.”

A Tesco spokesperson confirmed recent developments to Manchester Evening News, outlining changes in payment options for customers.
They said: “We regularly review the payment options available to our customers. It’s still quick and easy to earn points on your shopping and fuel and enjoy Clubcard Prices offers by tapping your Clubcard in-store, scanning it via the Tesco App, or adding it to your Apple or Google wallet.”
This adjustment means that shoppers who store their digital Clubcard in their Apple or Google wallet can accrue points and pay with just two taps, which is only slightly less convenient than the single tap offered by the soon-to-be-discontinued Pay in-store feature.
The Pay in-store service has been accessible through the Tesco Grocery and Clubcard app, under the “shop in-store” and “Pay in-store” tabs.
Users must have a registered Tesco.com and Clubcard account to utilize in-store payment and it’s also compatible with the “Scan as you shop” scanners at the physical stores.
However, Pay in-store will be phased out from Friday 7 March, signalling an end to this specific function within the Tesco app.
