The One Show’s Alex Jones, 47, has opened up about why she and her husband Charlie Thomson decided not to buy Mary Berry’s house.

The couple had previously looked around the home of the famous food writer and ex-Bake Off star, but ultimately decided against it.

On the White Wine Question Time podcast, Alex described the house as “lovely” but said its layout wasn’t suitable for her tall husband. She told host Kate Thornton that the house was essentially a mix of two different styles, with one part being quite cottage-like.

This proved to be an issue for Charlie, who is nearly six foot three. Alex compared him to Roald Dahl’s character, the BFG, in a Polly Pocket house, according to Wales Online.

The couple, who tied the knot in 2015 and have three children, recently moved homes after 11 years and welcomed a Labrador puppy into their family.

Sharing on Instagram, she revealed: “So, I have a bit of news. On Monday night – and it’s taken me a few days to process it – I came home and Charlie was standing in the middle of the drive with what I thought was a jumper.”

She went on: “And then, this black jumper moved. I got out of the car and said, ‘Whose dog is that?’ and he said, ‘It’s ours.’ We have a new arrival – come here Scout! We have a new little baby. He’s 10 and a half weeks old – he’s gorgeous.”

The BBC host has previously spoken about the difficulties of juggling motherhood and her career, admitting that it often leaves her feeling stretched thin. In a chat with Fabric Magazine, she confessed to feeling “super guilty” for leaving them but stressed her love for her job and its importance in supporting the family.

She further clarified that she tries to spend as much time as possible with them before heading off to work. She ended by saying: “And then I rush home to try and do their last story before they go to sleep. I haven’t got the solution – I just basically try and do it all.”

Last year, Alex shared her fears of losing her husband amid his devastating mental health struggle.

She revealed that her husband, with whom she shares three children, “wasn’t very well” last year and experienced a challenging period of poor mental health, which deeply impacted their entire family. Charlie’s struggles began after he was diagnosed with viral meningitis and Lyme disease.

The BBC star has now divulged more heartbreaking details, confessing that she felt helpless as she watched her husband suffer. Speaking on Fearne Cotton’s podcast Happy Place, Alex courageously described how the ordeal affected her mentally and emotionally.

BBC presenter Alex has opened up about her husband Charlie’s battle with mental health, revealing she felt powerless to help him. Speaking to podcast host Fearne, Alex shared: “Everybody has periods where you just don’t feel great. I mean going back to my late 20s – woah. Looking back now, that was a mess. And I’ve talked before, my husband has suffered in the past.”

When asked how she navigated that difficult time, Alex admitted she didn’t know how to react, saying: “You’re right. I went quite 1980s and was like – right, come on. That was the way I had been brought up. Snap out of it. It was grim. I didn’t know what to do. In general, I think people don’t reach out when they’re in despair.”

At one point, Alex feared she would lose her husband, confessing: “I was looking at him and thinking I’m looking and hearing somebody who is not my husband”.

However, a year on, Charlie is recovering and in a ‘much better place’. Alex is now urging others struggling with their mental health to reach out to loved ones for support.
