When working out at the gym or outside, some of us want to still look good while getting a hard earned sweat on. However, a lot of people are unsure of what to use as they don’t want to accidentally end up looking like a panda in the middle of their workout.
Fitness fanatics and influencers regularly share their gym routines on social media, as well as some hints and tips. One sub-category from this huge topic that has emerged on TikTok is people sharing their ‘workout makeup’.
There are over 56.7million posts in total surrounding gym-proof beauty – a further 20million primarily focusing on pilates. Many influencers have started sharing their top tricks to achieving a sweat-resistant makeup look, and many people are intrigued.
According to top brand Revolution Beauty, in the past month alone the number of Google searches for ‘how to make makeup sweat proof’ have risen by a staggering 70 per cent.
If you are worried about your makeup melting off in the middle of a pilates or weight lifting session, makeup artist Mel Trierweiler has shared her top trips on creating this much sought after look.
Additionally, she has detailed products to consciously avoid when working out, reports the Mirror. Mel’s first bit of advice is to avoid heavy foundations, full-coverage concealers and powders when working out.

This is because they will block your pores and may mix with your sweat, which could “cause skin irritation and breakouts”. She suggests looking for non-comedogenic options which avoid blocking pores.
She added: “It’s also best to avoid regular mascaras, as they can smudge and irritate the eyes. Instead, opt for a waterproof mascara that’s designed to endure sweat and humidity without budging. In terms of specific ingredients to stay clear of, avoid products with heavy oils, alcohol, and silicone. These ingredients can clog your pores, mix with sweat, and cause breakouts.”
If you feel like you need to wear a bit of makeup to go to the gym, Mel suggests using lightweight products that contain skincare benefits. This includes serum foundations as she says they are “ideal as they provide a breathable, non-comedogenic formula that evens out skin tone while keeping your complexion looking fresh and healthy.”

She also suggests products that include ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and peptides, as will hydrate and plump your skin. Additionally, gym goers should also use a setting spray to keep their makeup in place and lasting longer despite the amount you sweat.
Mel recommends the Revolution Superfix Misting Setting Spray as it “instantly locks your look in place and leaves your complexion with a shine-free finish.” You can buy the spray from Boots in a limited time deal of £8.79. This is a 20 per cent saving on the usual £10.99 RRP.
After you have finished working up a sweat, it is essential that you properly clean your skin. If you are unsure on how to do this, Mel has given her ultimate post-workout skincare routine. She says you should thoroughly cleanse your skin to remove any sweat, makeup and excess oils. This can be done with a cleanser or a collagen cleansing balm.
After this, you should moisturise your face to “restore hydration with a quality moisturiser to keep your skin nourished and balanced”. Mel advises that you go for a hydrating formula that “replenishes moisture and revitalises your complexion”.
