An American Airlines flight was forced to abandon its landing attempt in order to avoid a second plane trying to take off from the same runway at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred around 8:20 a.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said.

“An air traffic controller instructed American Flight 2246 to perform a go-around at Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) Airport to ensure separation was maintained between this aircraft and a preceding departure from the same runway,” the FAA said in a statement.

American Airlines said in its own statement that the go-around maneuver was executed safely and the plane was able to land normally.

“The crew followed safety procedures and the flight landed without incident,” the airline said.

In a separate incident Tuesday morning, a Southwest Airlines flight nearly missed a collision with a private jet that was taxiing on the runway at Chicago’s Midway Airport.

Multiple close calls and fatal plane crashes have already occurred in 2025, including a Delta flight that flipped upside down while making a crash landing in Toronto, injuring nearly two dozen people, and an American Airlines flight that collided with an Army Black Hawk helicopter near Washington D.C, killing everyone onboard both aircraft.

On Sunday, an American Airlines flight which originated at JFK was diverted to Rome over a bomb threat and escorted by Italian military jets.
