KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/Gray News) – A zoo in Tennessee is mourning the loss of a beloved member of its giraffe family.
Zoo Knoxville took to social media to share the passing of Lucille, who was born there in 2001.
“In her 24 years, and as one of the longest residents at the zoo, she had a lasting impact on our guests and staff, helping to foster appreciation for giraffes and conservation,” the zoo said. “Many had the chance to encounter Lucille up close, even feeding her from time to time, creating special memories that will not be forgotten.”
The zoo said it takes comfort in knowing that Lucille, who was considered a geriatric giraffe, lived a long and full life surrounded by those who cared for her.
“Lucille’s legacy will live on through the countless people she inspired,” the zoo continued.
Lucille was one of three giraffes at the zoo, along with Frances and Jumbe Junior, according to Zoo Knoxville’s website.
