BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB/Gray News) – A college student has died after allegedly participating in an off-campus fraternity ritual.
Southern University student Caleb Wilson, 20, was allegedly participating in an Omega Psi Phi fraternity ritual where pledges stand in a line when he collapsed.
Wilson was unresponsive when a group of friends brought him to Baton Rouge Hospital early Thursday morning, according to authorities.
The group had been at North Sherwood Forest Community Park, according to investigators.
Hospital staff pronounced Wilson dead and called the Baton Rouge Police Department at 3:15 a.m., triggering a death investigation.
“Southern University and A&M College is aware of an off-campus incident that may have resulted in the death of student Caleb Wilson, a junior from New Orleans majoring in mechanical engineering. The campus community extends condolences to his family, classmates and loved ones,” the university said in a statement.
Southern University said it is cooperating with the Baton Rouge Police Department.
An autopsy is being performed to determine the exact cause of death.
