One of the world’s most popular musicals is coming to Scotland later this year. Mamma Mia! has been enthralling audiences across the globe since 1999, when the ABBA-filled show first came to theatres.
It sparked a smash hit film – and sequel – and has ensured the legacy of the Swedish pop legends continues to thrive long after they burst onto the scene by winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974.
And now Mamma Mia! is heading to our capital, with the musical being performed at the Edinburgh Playhouse 30 times over 22 dates across December 2025 and January 2026.

The show tells the story of a daughter living on a Greek island with her mother and inviting her three potential fathers to her upcoming wedding – without telling her mum that her three former beaus will be arriving on the isle.
The musical weaves ABBA’s incredible back catalogue throughout, and has thrilled millions of music lovers all around the world in its 26 years.
The cast for the upcoming tour has not yet been announced, but the 2024-25 run included the likes of Izi Maxell, Mazz Murray, Ben Irish, Stephen Beckett, Christopher Dickins and Luke Jasztal. It’s currently unclear if the same actors will reprise their roles for the 2025-26 UK tour.

Judy Cramer’s musical has continued to grow since it was created at the turn of the millennium. And the 2008 movie with Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, and Pierce Brosnan – to name just a few – became the highest grossing live action musical film of all time when it was released.
Lily James starred in the 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which continued the story and became the world’s most successful musical sequel of all time.
