BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The city of Bluefield, West Virginia, is moving forward with more demolition work— as part of its ongoing downtown redevelopment effort.
Plans are underway to demolish what’s known as Building 210, the Bland Ferri Building, and the old Communications Workers of America Building 200 to create more parking spaces in downtown Bluefield.
Bids for the demolition were due last week and are currently under review.
The lowest bid—$296,000—came from Empire Salvage.
We spoke with the executive director of the Bluefield, West Virginia, Economic Authority Jim Spencer, who explains how this project will support future downtown development.
He says “The goal is to enhance more parking in the downtown, which now makes the landmark building, the Elks Building, and some of the surrounding buildings more attractive to a developer because now you’ve got parking right across the street. Right now, a couple of buildings do not have parking adjacent, and this would help in the long term with some of our redevelopment plans for downtown.”
While no demolition date has been set, the process is expected to take three to six months.
Necessary traffic control measures will be implemented as needed, but for now, southbound traffic on Bland Street is expected to remain open during construction.
